Avignon - day trip material. It's one of those places that you should go and see - if only for its well-preserved walled city - but it's a place that doesn't need a lot of time.

Now that it's coming into July, the days are really too hot to achieve anything much and our first attempt at walking around the old town was foiled by an oppresive heat and far too much sun. We sat instead under the trees of the campground and read the siesta time away. Once the sun started to go down we strolled back towards Pont d'Avignon and watched a bloated fluffy white cat float down the river before snapping way too many photos of the sunset and going back to the campground to sleep the night through (although I did dream of someone throwing cats off a cliff).

Up "early" the next morning we missed the first bus to the Pont du Gard and so headed up the main street of Avignon, eating icecreams and baguettes while meandering through the gardens, past the former Papal palace and Notre Dame cathedral. At 4.30 we finally managed to catch a bus to Pont du Gard where we enjoyed a blissful swim in the river, with little fish nibbling at our feet. The bus ride was worth the time too, for the lavender and sunflower fields. Beautiful countryside in Provence.

As for how our travels are going overall, we have only two weeks left before it's time to head back to London and look for a job and a place to live. I'll be glad to escape the rising temperatures but am a bit daunted about the pounds we'll have to fork out to secure a flat.

Rating out of 10: 8
In a word: Quaint
Something Interesting: During the 14th century, Avignon was the seat of the Papacy (rather than Rome)
