The sickness oh and some floating islands
Entry 98 of 102 | show all | print this entry |
The bus to Puno started so well but alas it wasn{t to last as 2 hours from Puno we broke down. Everyone got off the bus and waited while the drive looked under various parts of the bus and banged at it with a small spanner and then disappearing to go and find a mechanic. Me and Sarah sat in the sun for a bit, then moved to the shade, then as the sun went we moved back onto the bus. We played hangman for a bit and chatted to a dutch lady, finally the mechanic came and with the aid of some shampoo and a plaster we were on our way 6 hours after breaking down!! We finally arrived at Puno bus station but it took ages to get all our bags off. We got a taxi to the hostel both not feeling terribly well, we were greeted by a nice lady who sympathised with our plight and took us straight to our room, explained a few things and then left us. We drank some coca tea and went straight to bed, alas for me I did not sleep instead I threw up 7 times during the night which was nice.
The next morning I managed to stop throwing up by 7am but still didn{t feel great. Sarah ahd brekkie and went on the internet downstairs for a bit while I slept. That afternoon we were both unable to move and watched tv before finally venturing out for something to eat and drink. We also searched for a bank finally finding one on the main street where we also found a cafe for a drink. We then went back to the hostel and watched some more tv and having a cold shower!! The next morning we managed our brekkie and the nwent downstairs to wait for our transfer to the floating islands. A minibus took us to our boat and it was luckily a very small boat ride out to the floating islands. Once we arrived we stepped down onto very squashy ground apantetly on ly 10cm thick but still it was well anchored and felt very solid just weird to walk on very spongy. We all sat down while the guide explained how the island was made and about the people who lived on it. He used a rope to show us the depth of the lake before we were left to our own devices. One of the local women showed me and Sarah the inside of her house and made me put on one of her skirts and jackets which were a little big but made for great comedy photos. We had a wander around the stalls specially laid out for the tourists before an old lady rowed us to another island on a reed canoe. The 2nd island was very touristy with a post office, public telephone and a couple of restaurants. There were also more stalls and a teepee hotel, me and Sarah wandered for abit and chatted to a scottish man about our trip as we waited for our boat to pick us up. We got the minibus to drop us off at the bus station and we booked our bus to Cusco. We got a tuk tuk to the main square and went for a snack and then on the internet, before going back to the hostel to chill and watch tv for abit. We packed up our bags ready for the next day and went for something to eat, we managed to find a restaurant with a christmas tree and had to remind ourselves that it was November and was ok. I didn{t eat much as was feeling dodgy again, we both went back to the hostel and went to bed as we had to be at the bus station for 7.30am the next day for our bus to Cusco.
