Lets Off Road

There was a short ten minute journey on the ferry which was long enough for me (Aimee).  I was still fiddling with my seatbelt and I looked up and we were zomming down the beach, waves lapping at the side of us, wicked experience.  Me and Sarah were at the back and it was rather bumpy, apparently they were what we were to call 'the whoopsa daisys'.  Soon we were proper off roading off the beach along a bumpy sandy track, forest at both sides.  The first step was Lake Mckenzie a beautiful fresh water lake with clear blue water.  Me and Sarah queued to change into our bikinis alas to no avail as it was absolutely freezing so paddling was all we did, apart from Mags who was hardcore and dived in, in her bathers.  We also have to thank Mags for nicking muffins and biscuits off the other tour group, yummy. We drove down to the resort after a minor hick up where we got stuck on the way into the resort.  We checked into the resort we had our own room in a cabin which we shared a kitchen and bathroom, it was very nice, very posh camping ;-)  As we were supposed to have food included in our camping trip Brendan told us that we could pretend to be part of the other tour group (as there were olny two of us) and get free food, it was very nice indeed.  The night turned into a bit of a session as me and Sarah drank with our tour guide Brendan and Graham another tour guide and some of his group which included some Brazilian twins.

The next morning we got breakfast and then we off roaded again with a beautiful drive over to the east side of the island.  Our first stop was a lookout over a sandy desert which seemed to go on for ages.  We walked down to it and by it was lake Wobbi the deepest lake on the island alas it was also too cold for a swim.  We took a few piccies and then we all walked across it and got to know our group all lovely people.  As we enjoyed a bit of peace and quiet it was all broken by the screams of an American girl who let out a blood curdling scream because a spider walked across her foot, naturally we all ran off and did not go to her aid ;-)  We met Brendan at the beach and then sped off along the side of the waves.  We went to Cathedral beach for lunch though we all had to look around the shop for ten minutes as Brendan got nervous if people watched him make lunch!!  Next stop was Champagne (CHAMPAGNE!) pools so called as when the waves break over the rocks into the pools it looks like bubbling champagne, honest!  Alas it was still too cold to swim but we did get some cracking wave shots.  Next we climbed Indian head for a great view over Fraser Island, Sarah raced ahead of me as the group coming down had seen whales, naturally by the time we got htere there were none to be seen!!!  We drove hell for leather along the beach as the tide was starting to come in we stopped at the pinnacles which were rocks made up of different coloured sands and also a shipwreck which Brendan gave us a full history of.  The next stop was Eli creek (where we managed to nick more muffins off a tour guide) a freshwater creek which you could float down, alas we had no floatation device, however as it was so pretty I braved the water and Brian decided to join me as we strolled through the water it was absolutely gorgeous.  As we drove back to the resort Brendan said he could smell Koalas which we all got excited about as we had not seen one yet, he stopped the 4 x4 and pointed up to the tree we all craned our necks only to see a stuffed koala with a rucksack strapped to the tree!!  Once back at the resort we all enjoyed the sunset with a drink in our hand, naturally.  After a bit of a rest we went to Brian and Grahams lodge for a few drinks before it was time to hit the Dingo bar once again.  The free food that night was Mexican and was jolly good too.  After we ate we nipped to the Brazilian twins lodge for some free wine alas they had gone to bed but an english girl whose nane I forget, though she did have a very posh voice, shared her rose wine with us which was nice, random french guy played a plastic digeridoo and we chatted to a welsh couple.  Then we hit the bar again where Brendan and Graham made us a brazilian drink which took awhile as they had no cocktail making impliments and had to improvise, it was worth the wait though.  We got chatting to an English girl, we got a bit tipsy so much so that we all hit the dancefloor to do Whigfields saturday night and the macarena.  I also have to complimet Brendan at this point who was wearing a Manchester 2002 commonwealth games top whoo hoo.  As soon as the french guy started to become sleazly we knew it was time to go back to our lodge. We escourted our new english friend back who promptly fell down the staris to her lodge.  I had a random arguemnt with a kiwi tour guide in our lodge the specifics of which escape me before we hit the sack.

An attempt of a lie in was rudely interuppted by the cleaner at 8am, so we had tea on our verandah in fetching paper cups.  We checked out and threw our bags in the 4x4 and made our way down to the resort.  After a quick go on the internet as it is expensive in these resorts, we chilled by the pool.  Then it was time to off road for the last time we drove across the island to the beach and sped along it for the last time looking in vain for whales and dingos.  We also got a ticking off as we all rembered everyones name really well apart from Louanna (apologies again & also if I got the spelling wrong).  As we drove down the beach Brendan decided to stop and look for Pilkes (not sure if that's what they were called but it was something like that) we all got out as he searched for lumps in the sand alas he had no success so we piled in the 4 x4 again and went further down the beach.  Next time he stopped we all stayed in the 4 x4 as he looked alas this time he was succesful and showed us a shell type creature.  As no one would eat ut he threw it back on the beach and we watched a bird eat it instead.  Then we drove to the ferry and were soon safely back in Rainbow beach.
