Don Det is an island that is located in what is known as the 4000 islands in Southern Laos. The islands are located in the mighty Mekong River. They are peaceful, quiet and very relaxing. They only have electricity for 3 hours a day. I went with some people that I met in Vang Vieng.
We decided to take an excursion to see the Mekong dolphins (very rare and almost extinct) and the largest waterfall (by volume) in Southeast Asia. In order to see the dolphins, our boat driver took us illegally to the Cambodia side of the Mekong. It was kind of hard to see them so the boat took us a little closer. Honestly, I wasn't that impressed. However, the waterfall was impressive. It was massive and came from three different directions.
On our way back to the guest house, there was a man lying on the side of the road. He looked dead but our driver would not stop even though we were all screaming. Once we arrived (15 minutes later) the driver asked us if we thought he was really dead. He said "If you think he's still alive then I should probably call the police so that they can get him off of the road." I could not believe how casual he was being. Shouldn't he have stopped and helped? So crazy.
That night, we all went down to the Sunset bar to watch the beautiful sunset. It is just so peaceful and was exactly what I needed.
