Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world. It has over 100 fresh water lakes, many creeks and is covered by rainforrest which is very rare. I decided to join a self-guided 4 wheel drive camping trip. I met my group (7 Brits, 1 Irish and 2 Germans) and we all through in money to buy alcohol and food. Then we got our transportation. It was a big hummer type truck that had three seats in the front and two rows in the back that faced each other. We had 45 minutes to get from the rental place to the ferry. We decided that it would be a good idea to stop at McDonald's for ice cream. After that we had to rush to make it on the ferry. We made it with one minute to spare.

The ferry ride took around 45 minutes. When we got off of the boat, we immediately started off roading. Fraser does not have any traditional roads. The roads through the rainforest are really bumpy. Our first stop was Lake Birrabeen Our ride
Our ride
. It was so beautiful. The water itself was a turquoise color and it felt like a warm bath. We spent a few hours laying out and swimming around in the water. We then went and had lunch where we encountered some huge lizards. They are everywhere on this island. We then went to Lake Boomanjinbut which is known as the red lake and is the largest perched lake in the world. However, there wasn't a beach to lay on so we decided to head towards Cathedral beach to base camp.

The ride to base camp was amazing. We left the rainforest and began driving on the beach. It was a much smoother ride. I loved that the beach was our road. We didn't really pass that many other vehicles. So we cranked the music and enjoyed the ride. We arrived at base camp and set up our tents. Then we immediately started celebrating the fact that we were in such a beautiful place. The other groups all cooked dinner but we partied for a little bit first. Then we decided to cook some sausages. After we ate we played a few games then we headed down to the beach to party the night away.

The next day we got up and went back on the road. I was so happy to be there. We literally just drove around and stopped off at a few more lakes. Then we decided to go to the Champagne pools which is the only place that you can swim in the sea without risking the sharks and stingrays Lake Birrabeen
Lake Birrabeen
. The coast of Fraser Island has more sharks then anywhere else in Australia. The Champagne pools is an area that is blocked by these huge boulders. The waves crash over the rocks creating minature, safe pools. We just spent some time relaxing and swimming around. Next, we decided to go hike up Indian Head. This is a wonderful cliff that provides amazing views of the sea and the island. It also is a great spot for looking at the marine life. We saw dolphins, huge sharks and turtles. Then we went to a smaller lake which has a large population of small turtles. They were so cute! If you clapped your hands all of their heads would go up. We also stopped on the beach at the Maheno shipwreck. It is a huge shipped that is whithering away on the beach.

That night we made a great Spaghetti Bolognese and had a few drinks. I went to bed kind of early because I was absolutely exhausted. The next morning, we got up and went to Lake Wabby which is a lake that is known for its sand dunes. People ran down them and jumped in the water. Instead, I chose to lay out on the beach and read my book. After that we made our way to Lake Mackenzie, the most famous of the lakes. However, as soon as we got there it started to pour down rain. So we went to catch the ferry.

When we got back to our hostel, Beaches, we went to the bar and had dinner. We celebrated a great trip. Honestly, everything was absolutely amazing and I would go back in a heartbeat.
