Feliz ano to all of you!
I reluctantly left Lago de Atitlan on Friday morning.  I see why so many people never leave...it's an addicting place!  I moved back to Antigua and got a hotel with my friend from the first week of school.
On Saturday, took a cooking class and learned how to make tortillas, guatemalan enchiladas (very different than the mexican variety), chuchitos, and bunuelos.  Very fun and delicious!
Then,  on New Year's eve climbed an active volcano (can now check that one off my life's list of accomplishments!).  Had to be ready to go around 5am, so needless to say, by the time I got back to town was ready for a nap, not a new year's celebration!  The trip was really hard and worth every minute of the effort.  The views were spectacular!
The celebration in Antigua for New Year's was unbelievable.  Las bombas (fireworks) were plentiful as were the multitudes of people in the Parque central ready to celebrate.
The best part of celebrating in Latin America... no rules!  You can just go buy a bottle of champagne and drink out of it on the street.  The worst part of celebrating in Latin America...no rules!  The fireworks were CRAZY and you really have to watch your step.  I was almost the victim of a stray roman candle!

My plans for the upcoming week have changed a bit due to some difficulty in traveling on New Year's Day.  I am planning on heading to Livingston tomorrow morning (shuttle picking me up at 4:00am...ugh.)  Plan to spend a few days on the Caribbean side of Guatemala and then move on to the ruins at Tikal before heading back to the states next Monday.  Very excited to see some more of Guatemala!
Hope your holidays were really fun!
Love,
sara

Sounds muy muy harsh, Chica. Glad you're out there takin' one for the team. Perhaps Spanish can, but English cannot describe the depths of my envy! A volcano, a chicken bus, a 5 foot hole-in-the-wall for the involuntary sharing of property, a sacrilegious dog, and the public intoxication of clergy?! I'm so moving.
