Hola! My time in Antigua is coming to a close. But, I will be back here before the trip is over. I finished school this morning. Unfortunately, did not get any fancy diploma...just the satisfaction that I can now speak as many words as a very slow 2 year old!
Many things about Antigua are actually very similar to Chicago-- car alarms at 3am, fireworks (ahhh, life in Logan Square!), and police with questionable motives.
But there are many differences, too: You canīt put toilet paper in the toilet (A habit I have finally broken), the showers are rigged with electricity (aye aye aye!), and the banks regularly run out of money (I waited in line for 30 minutes for the ATM this morning and when I finally got to the front, they ran out of money--so, I just successfully got money out after waiting another 45 minutes. From what I understand, this is the week that Guatemalans get their christmas checks, so there are lines around the block at every bank in town.)
Yesterday I walked to the cerro de la cruz
Letīs see... for those foodies out there... for lunch today, Silvia made a sopa with potatoes and rice that was very yummy and to top it off...fresh pineapple juice. Yum. What else? All of the servings at Silviaīs house have been huge and I have to keep telling her that I have a small stomach. She has finally stopped making me a huge breakfast after I told her that in the US, sometimes we only have coffee. Although, it certainly hasnīt stopped her from eating my leftovers right off my plate!
Tomorrow, Iīm off to Lake Atitlan... I hired a microbus that will pick me up at my house in the morning... $5US for a 2 hour drive. Not bad! After taking a 30minute ride in a chicken bus the other day, Iīm going to try to avoid them altogether if I can afford it. They are old US elementary school buses, rehabbed on the outside in beautiful bright colors, but the inside is just like you remember. Uncomfortable even when you were 4 feet tall! Iīm really excited to get to the lake. Yo necesito descansar.
Later, gators-

Cloudy pic from Cerro de la Cruz
. The police accomany you up to the top and it is truly a spectacular view of the city. Although, just climbing this short way I was out of breath and I am already starting to question my ability to climb Vulcan Pacaya!
