Life in Antigua

¡hola, amigos! Life in Antigua is great! I´m picking up more and more spanish. Mostly, I´m able to understand a lot, but speak very, very little.
School has been really good. But, it is very hard. You just literally sit across the table from your teacher for 4 hours with a 1/2 hour break. I´m learning a lot and my teacher is extremely patient...I know I must be a frustrating student! It´s amazing that we are able to talk for 4 hours! But it´s not all fun, I´m learning muchos, muchos gramaticos which is very difficult. I would say that you learn more conversationally AND gramatically in one week of school here than in an entire college semester.
Life at home is good, too.
The first night I moved in with Sylvia, she invited me along on a posada. It´s a tradition where every night from 12/16 - 12/24, a group of friends carry a model of Joseph and Mary around and sing christmas carols. Everyone is holding beautiful, colorful candles. Then, every night they end at a different family´s home and do a small play where all the people on the outside of the house ask to be let in, and the people inside tell them there is no room for them in the inn. Then, (the best part) you go inside to the house and have yummy snacks. We had sweet bread and puncha de la fruta, which was a hot drink made from papaya. It was very cool to be a part of it!
So far, the most colorful personality I have met in Antigua is Terri, the dog that lives in my house.
Sunday night, I was sitting in the ¨living room¨ with him and he just walked right over to the Christmas tree and pissed on the nativity scene. Tell me what you really think, Terri.
I think he was mad because he wasn´t able to walk with the posada? His favorite game to play with me is ¿Donde esta la hamborgesa? He has this toy hamburger and I throw it around and he loves to do this for HOURS!!
Tuesday, after school, i went with the rest of the spanish students to a small pueblo outside Antigua and played santa claus. There were over 100 kids there--we played games and handed out christmas presents. The kids were so cute and it was a really great to be a part of it.
Then, last night I went to a cafe where they show movies for free. You can just order a drink and watch whatever they´re playing. Kind of like the Brew&View in Chicago but much cooler and free! They show mostly American movies and truthfully, I have found that this is a really good way to learn spanish!
Need to run, tengo muchas mas verbos aprendar antes la escuela manaña!
much love, sara

yes, it is really great here! the tummy is fine... it's not normal, but it's not giving me any really bad trouble! i feel like such a dork taking pictures of myself, but when you travel solo, if you don't take pictures of yourself, you won't have ANY!
hope you are well...
feliz navidad, lauren!
love,
sb
