The Caribbean North Coast - Taganga and Tayrona
Entry 24 of 55 | show all | print this entry |

Two days of the city was enough, so I hopped on a plane to the tropical Caribbean north coast. From the airport of Barranquilla (home to Shakira), I took a 2 hour bus but they forgot to tell me where to get off, so I ended up in the middle of nowhere & had to wait for another bus to take me 45mins back to Santa Marta! This town was my base for the next 2 weeks, with a friendly hostel Miramar & a little beach where I met a cute local policeman! We went out for my 1st taste of the famous Colombian nightlife - dancing all night in a cool club with an open air dance floor & a great mix of salsa, regetton, pop & rock! As much fun as that was, I headed off the next day to the sweet village of Taganga, where I found a bargain room right on the beach. The snorkeling was good & the juice stalls lining the beach even better, with huge exotic fruit smoothies for about 35 pence, definitely a little piece of heaven!
From there, I got another bus to the famous national park of Tayrona, walking for 90 mins through the monkey-filled forest to get to a hostel, where a hammock 15 secs from the beach set me back less than 2 pounds (& some of you wonder why I keep travelling!!!) Who cares that the showers were rather communal, the loos leaky & unlit, & the hammocks 50cm from the next one, when it was surrounded by forest & with empty beaches just minutes away? After a late-night bonfire,we took a morning hike up to some Indian ruins, spotting plenty of blue lizards & butterflies & several huge locusts. After that, it was serious beach chill-out time! Basic but idyllic, I wish I could have stayed there for a week...
