We took a little puddle-jumper flight from Kauai to Maui yesterday morning. We cut it a little fine at the airport, but everything worked out okay (hint; if you have access to a computer, print your boarding pass before you get to the airport, it saved us). Today's Maui is much sunnier and less windy than Kauai, so we made the short drive on the highway to Kihei with all the windows down.
Sandra's picked another winner with our condo in Maui Kamaole - we swam in the pool while waiting for everything to be made ready, and our ground floor condo in the low rise complex is large, clean, well equipped and comfortable.
The vibe in Kihei is completely different - there doesn't seem to be one. Everywhere on Kauai had a relaxed and friendly surf-bum aesthetic, all the towns looked like a collection of shacks that had sprouted up because (a) the local beach has most excellent gnarly peaks, and (b) some dude decides to sell wicked burritos. While Maui's Kihei is more like Miami. We pick up some groceries and sadly discover necessities are just as expensive on Maui as Kauai - up to twice as pricey as the mainland. I understand that all the packaged goods are expensive as they have to be flown in, but I'm disappointed at how little Hawaiian produce is available in the supermarkets. Apart from pineapples almost all the produce is imported e.g. they grow 60 different varieties of avocado here, but all they sell are Californian Haas. Even the farmer's market was spartan - but we did buy beautiful pineapple and some ripe star-fruit (amazing; ripe star-fruit are delicious).
Saturday is warm, but grey and rainy, so a good time to catch up with uploading the photographs and the blogs. And hunting around looking for wireless internet - we sit in a Starbucks for a while - in the land of Kona coffee, charbucks tastes just as burnt as usual, but they do offer a mocha coconut frappuccino (available in Hawaii only). And Quantum of Solace is playing in Kihei's theatre...
