Olympic Park was built for the 1972 summer Olympics. This was very obvious when we saw the avocado green color of the seats in the Olympic Stadium - long live the 70's! After the Olympics the stadium served as the home stadium of the FC Bayern München until a new soccer stadium was built. Now it's used by the women's soccer team and for various cultural events. You can actually pay to walk on the roof which we did not do. We were also able to go into the Olympic Swim Hall, that famous pool where Mark Spitz won 7 Gold Medals. It's still used today by the public for a fee.
The Olympiaturm or Olympic Tower is one of the landmarks in Munich and can be seen from many different areas of the city
Of course what the 1972 Munich Olympics is best known for, unfortunately, is the Munich Massacre, where a group of Palestinian terrorists took the Israeli team hostage, and ended with the death of all the hostages.
We had lunch in the Olympic Park, and I had my favorite German fare that I actually remembered from my visit there 35 years ago - Leberkäse. This literally translates to liver cheese, which it is not at all - no liver and no cheese. It's like a meat loaf and is made with corned beef, pork, bacon and onions. The ingredients are ground till they are very fine, then packed together into loaves which are baked in an oven till the crust is brown. Yummy!
We also walked around the grounds of Olympic Park - again, beautiful. That's a word I seem to use a lot but it's true - Munich is an absolutely beautiful city.
After Olympic Park we went back to the apartment and picked up the puppies to take them to Hirschgarten
That night was chicken truck night for dinner. There's a truck that moves to different locations in the city, and Tuesday night they are parked across the street from their apartment. They make some delicious roasted chicken! After dinner it was off to bed since we were getting up really early the next day to leave on our UK adventure.
