Last night's birthday party and dance class were fun. The birthday party was small and around a table so it was hard to just mingle in English. For a while, it was all in German and I smiled politely like an idiot and ate the food. Then a gentleman sitting next to me engaged me in conversation of travel so by the end I wasn't feeling quite so awkward. It was still cool to participate in a German birthday party though. Fabian had called the dance instructor ahead of time and told me that I would be allowed to take the class for free which was extremely nice. The class was, of course, in German though. So perhaps I didn't pick up on every subtlety, but, generally, the class was easy to follow. Its amazing how much is communicated through gestures, facial expressions and tone. We worked on footwork and drags which was great because they are both things that I need to work on.

Tonight, I will meet Fabian and Arne at the house at 8:30 and we will go to a juggling club. I don't juggle much, just 3 balls with 2 hands and 2 balls with one hand, but I had been practicing passing and clubs before, so it should be fun. Little known fact: the Lindy crowd and the juggling crowd often overlap as they do here in Hamburg. It was the same in my University, half of the juggling club was made up of Lindy Hoppers and eventually some of the jugglers took up Lindy. Not sure what the connection is there other than a fatal attraction to alternative subcultures. Apparently the juggling community has workshops and exchanges just like the Lindy Hop community. Who woulda thunk!

Well, I'd better go. I have to get out and explore Hamburg in the rain and cold. I guess I can't be lucky in everything.
