Well this entry was supposed to be from Berlin so I ll explain what happened. On Thursday afternoon I was told that some people were going to Berlin that night since there was a cheap ticket. Well Iona, Libby, Marios, Ulla and I got excited and were all packed to head to Berlin until Sunday. I think I may have explained this before but on the weekends you can buy a ticket to anywhere in Germany for 30 Euro between 5 people (6 Euro each). So instead of paying the normal price of 90 Euro one way to go to Berlin were only paying 30 return. Anyway when we got to the train station it turns out that you need to order this ticket 3 days in advance.

Needless to say we were a bit disappointed but we were all in the mood to travel somewhere. We wanted to go to either Amsterdam or Brussels. I wanted to go to Brussels since my mate Adam was there and he works in a hostel so I could stay there for half price 01. Before we were supposed to go to Berlin

. One of the group, who shall remain nameless, was not so adventurous so did not want to go. So instead of travelling, we did the next best thing. We got drunk. It just so happened that there was a place that had cheap cocktails so we had a few of them as well as had a few drinks in my dorm room. I swear I should never touch cocktails cause they give me horrendous hangovers.

Well after that we decided we should still go somewhere that is quite close. That place turned out to be Frankfurt. So on Saturday morning Libby, Marios, Ulla (Finland), Hannah (Finland) and I went to Frankfurt. When we got to the hostel we were pleasantly surprised. It was an excellent room with tv and private shower. Not bad for 10 Euro a night. We booked it for 3 people but had 4 in the room since it was cheaper. Marios's sister lives in Frankfurt so we didn't see Marios till the end of the trip.

During WWII 80% of Frankfurt was destroyed by bombing raids in 1944. An effort was made to restore many of the lost buildings. Frankfurt feels like a newer town with more modern buildings and skyscrapers along the horizon. You get a feeling that it is much more commercial town than Cologne. Our first stop was the main tower which is modern skyscraper that you can climb. The platform is 200m above the city an you get an excellent glimpse of the city 02. Ahhh beautiful cocktails

.

While up on the tower, the girls spotted the shopping district. Being with 3 girls did not give me a fair chance to pick somewhere else to go so I was dragged along for the ride. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought. Along the shopping strip were many street performers so it kept me entertained. There were also some great sports stores with World Cup merchandise in them.

We then took a walk around town and we ended up at old town. I thought this place was the most interesting part of Frankfurt. I also got to witness something I have never heard of before. At about 3:45 all the church bells were ringing for about 20 minutes. I guess this symbolises the time when something happened to Jesus. I wouldn't have a clue, I'm not religious. There was also a Scottish band near the church as well.

After a long day we took a rest and then went out to discover the night life of Frankfurt. First up was an Aussie pub, which wasn't really very Aussie looking to me. Next was an Irish pub where the drink prices were very expensive. After that we ended up in the sleazy part of Frankfurt. Basically it is a few streets with nothing but sex shops and strip clubs 03. I won't bother explaining

. The people who hung around there were disgusting. Well we wanted to get out of there as soon as possible since some of the people started to follow us.

We found one more pub for the night. In this pub I found the best example of American ignorance. There were 4 Americans in this bar that had been living in Frankfurt for about a year and they could not even say please or thank you in German. I couldn't believe it.

We left at about 4am and got some well earned rest. One disadvantage of going during Easter is that everything was closed on Easter Sunday. Except for a few places to eat there was nothing to do. So we headed back to Cologne at about 2pm. Anyway it was a good weekend, better than sitting in the wonheim for the weekend.

So with a bit of planning I am planning to go to Berlin. I have no idea if it will be before I go to Ireland. Ciao.

Yeah Frankfurt is a bit of a business capital - Bankfurt is what it is called by Germans who live in other places. Not bad, but I don't think I would like to live there - cool pub streets however.
PS, I work in Bruges, not Brussels
