Madgaon Residency

We started early morning from Mumbai on  the Janshatabdi Express on the Konkan Railway, which is always a pleasure to travel through, and reached Madgaon at around 4PM.

On the over bridge of the Madgaon station, we saw the first quirky sight of the day. It was a long line of trucks loaded over a goods train.

Before we got out of the station, we got a local map, which came in very handy later. After around fifteen minutes of a  rattling and jam packed bus ride, we reached the main market area and chose to stay at Madgaon Residency, run by the Goa Tourism Corporation.
At a snack place called Penguin, which is probably the only vegetarian place around, we had this local variety of idli called Sanaa. It is made from rice flour fermented with some toddy and has a sweetish taste and they had also stuffed it with sweetened coconut.
Another bus ride around town gave us a glimpse of the local Goan life, not the touristy beachy stuff. We passed by some beautiful old and big bungalows, which Madgaon is quite famous for. Dinner was at the old Goan classic, Longuinhos. It has a look of an old Irani(Persian) cafe, just a bit more vibrant to give it a good Goanese character. We had crab meat, chicken and a vegetarian biryani, all of the food was exemplary, the kinds that makes a place sustain for generations, as is the case with Longuinhos.
Walking around the market area, you easily realise what a major part alcohol plays in the life here.We saw a shop of tiles and bricks selling wine. The market is closed on Sundays, except for the wine shop that opens for a few hours in the morning. When we hired the taxi bikes the next day to take us to the railway station, the motorcycle pilots(as their riders are called), were smelling of alcohol at 7AM !!
