What I did
Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary
One is via Pen-Mahad-Roha. Taking this route you reach right to the sanctuary gate. You get off at the village Supegaon, and right across is the PWLS gate. However, the frequency of these buses isnt really good-some 3-4 buses in a day.
We took the longer route from Alibaug.
The frequency for buses from Alibaug to Murud is very good. The buses from Mumbai and Thane also take this route.
Its a beautiful drive, along the sea. You get to see the beaches of Akshi, Nagaon, Revdanda, Kashid right on the way !The stop closest to Phansad is this village called Sarva. But the way to Phansad is through the forest. We were advised by fellow passengers and the conductor to not get off here. Instead get off at Arsoli(?) village, and take an autorickshaw from there to the sanctuary
We reached PWLS at around 5PM. We met the forest officer Mr. Temkar and another Mr. Naik. The forest department provides 3-4 tents for overnight stay. The official booking needs to be done through the forest office. But Mr. Temkar let us stay in one of the empty tents. The food is arranged by the women of the Supegaon village, who run a "Mahila Bachat Group". However the day we went, there was some Hanuman festival in the village. So the women were busy cooking in the temple. Which meant there was absolutely no way of getting food around the sanctuary. Thankfully, the auto guy who dropped us(Rajesh) was a really friendly guy. He agreed to go down to Majgaon and get dinner back for us.
All these details sorted, we set out for a walk in the sanctuary. All the trails in the sanctuary are pedestrian- Phansad Gan(4.5km), Chikhal Gan(6km), Dharnachi Gan(2.5km) etc. Gan is the local word for lake. The Dharnachi Gan eventually leads to the Sarva village on the other side. The forest all along is quite dense. That evening, we saw a few Grey Hornbills, Bharadwaj, and Langoors.
Dinner had arrived by the time we got back. It was almost dark, and we had a mindblowing view of the full moon through the trees
Mrs. Naik was kind enough to give us plates, spoons etc for dinner from her kitchen.
The next morning we took the Phansad Gan trail which eventually joined the Chikhal Gan trail. We saw a lot of birds, but couldn't identify many since we didn't have binoculars. Also saw a lot of butterflies, spider and langoors.
We got back from the trails at around 12 noon. Since the village women were still busy with the festival, no food was available. We decided to leave and have lunch down in Majgaon. Another family had come to the sanctuary by then, who wanted the tent. We were asked to leave immediately.
We again called Rajesh to pick us up and drop us at Majgaon. We had some decent homely type of food at a place called MAK in Majgaon and headed to Murud.
