That night I attended a big party in nearby village, Kandel with Claudia and her friends, Nadine, Martina and Anna. This week is called Karnival which all of south Germany celebrates by dressing up in strange costumes and scaring away the winter. They throw big parties, parades and generally go a little mad, hence it is called the fifth season. The party in Kandel had about 500 people, Claudia went as a Cowgirl, Nadine and Martina as college girls, and Anna as an Indian queen. I went as a Russian Csar, since that was the only costume I could find in the second hand shop in Gemersheim the week before for 10 euros! At the party the Germans sang strange songs and danced in traditional style.
