Flag of Italy  , Veneto,
Saturday, April 16, 2011

So, the itinerary for the next 20 days is as follows: Venice, Rome, Sorrento (Naples, Pompeii, Capri), Amalfi (Ravello, Positano, Paestum), and finally Verona.
We had a 7:00pm flight to Venice from Paris on April 13. It was only about an hour flight. We got in the city of Venice around 9:30 and checked into our apartment. The five of us shared a really nice 3 bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room apartment. The bathroom even had a bidet. I had been waiting all year for this! Then, we went out and had our first Italian meal. I had spaghetti with olive oil and garlic sauce. Yes, it was good. The end of day 1 out of 20.
Day 2. We found the market and bought food for the next few days. The streets of Venice are more like alleyways. There are absolutely no cars. Any travel is done by boat. They have garbage boats, fire boats, taxi boats....any form in transportation is turned into a boat here. With this comes a never ending maze of alleyways. You kinda just say "lets go this way" and you go with it. Very disorientating in my opinion.
Here also begins the eating of crazy amounts of gelato. Out of 20 days, there were probably only 3 days I didnt have gelato. But, on the first full day in Venice I had gelato 3 times during the day. Guess thats what happens when your main travel group is 2 guys.....I also had my first cannoli. Heaven.
Day 3. More food, shopping, and walking through the maze that is Venice. Nothing extremely special to see in Venice. Just enjoying the city and taking in the sights. I always imagined a gondola to be seen floating lazyily down a quiet stretch of water. This was not really the case. With all of the water traffic, a quiet float down the river was hard to come by. You would have to be on a "side street" waterway to get this ideal setting. On these sidestreet waterways you see doors from peoples apartments sitting just inches above the water. Where you would think there would be a sidewalk...theres just water. Its an interesting city.
