School decided to kick our butts right away. We really only have two classes right now, though we officially have four. We have our design class and structures classes that are the only ones we have during the week. French is once a week but this will be our last week of french, plus its french, not that hard :) And our fourth class is history. But, this semester how it works is we had one full week of history the first week back at school and then one full week at the end of march, where we have a 3 hours lecture in the morning then a site visit in the afternoon in Paris or a small town right outside Paris. Our history teacher was Professor J.R. Curtis who is really well known, has written books and met Frank Gehry and all the other big guys. He was very interesting to listen to and very interesting to sit and have a conversation with.
We visited 6 different places that week. We visited Villa Savoye and Alvar Aalto's house, some of the more well known places I guess. Both were outside of Paris, but the second one was in the real country and it was the cutest town ever. I would love to have a little cottage house with all of the open land like that. It was reallllyyy pretty. You probably dont know the names I'm throwing out but maybe you do, so I'll tell you anyway :) Our history week in march will include an overnight stay at a monastery in our own cell. Interesting.
Right now our design project is an individual project, unlike last semester it was with a partner. My project is to design a working/living space for a writer's colony on a site located in the Montparnasse district (arrondissement) of Paris. I'm having a TON of fun with this project along with the fact that it is focusing on residential living, which is what I have an interest in....as of now.
Right now I'm look for an internship for this summer, and...can you believe it...., searching for graduate schools!!!!!!!! I cant believe I'm almost done with college. CRAZY! And scary.
But random story I dont know if I told before. We had a party in our studio at school the week before Christmas break. I went upstairs to use the bathroom (which are men/women bathrooms) and I closed the door and locked it. Stupid me locked it with my finger, why, because it was broken, duh, well Sam if it's broken, you probably wont get it open again. Well.....when it was time to leave the stall, I couldnt get the door open. These arent normal stalls, of course. They are cement walls that go like 7 feet up. I try standing on the toilet, doesnt work. I end up calling someone to get a guy to help me out. He's tall, thankfully, and jumps over and has to help lift me out of the stall. Exciting, I know.
Random things.........well at church, there are no less than 22 altar servers between the ages of 7 and 11. With 3-4 older ones in their teens. There are atleast 500 people every sunday morning at the 11am mass. I figured out if you sit in the second section of chairs, there is no kneeler, so you can skip the painful kneeler they have for you. Bad I know, but it really hurts. Sorry.
Nothing exciting has really happened lately. Just been really busy. There are only 3 months left and now I'm trying to cram in everything I can. I went shopping on the Champs Elysees last weekend. "Shopping".....they had sales at some of the stores because this was the month Paris could have sales. The government dictates when cities can have sales, and January was our month. Any high end store you could want was there. Crazy. Louis Vuitton (little purses starting at 200euros), and I just drew a blank on other places, but it was great to look at everything I can't afford, like watches that cost 18,000euros sitting the the store windows. I took pics so eventually I'll get them up here. Going to the top of the Arc de Triomphe is next, after I figure out how to cross the big scary circle street.
Things coming in the next 3 months:
Feb 12-20 Aunt Nora is coming to visit!! We are meeting in Barcelona, staying there for four days, going to Madrid for a night then flying out to Marrakech, Morroco for four days. I'm really excited about Morroco. We're staying in what sounds like a really awesome place. It's called a Riad, which is an old Morrocan house converted into a hotel-type place. Plus it'll be in the 70's :D Which, by the way, its been in the 50's here lately. Enjoying the snow back home? hehehe
The weekend after we get home, I plan on visiting Normandy.
March 10-13 I'll be going to Finland. We had an optional Structures trip to Amsterdam this weekend. Seeing as I was already there my roommates and I opted out and are doing our own thing.
March 17th I'm going to my first concert ever!!!! We are going to see Taylor Swift at the Zenith in Paris, followed by a math test the next day haha. It's all good.
April 13 - May 3 will be spent, most likely, entirely in Italy. I plan on going to one of the Greek Islands also. Whether is happens during the first week of this time period or in my last week in May before I come home is still to be decided. But our itinerary for April 20-30 which is our required sketching trip with an instructor is as follows:
Wednesday, 4/20: Meet at 9:30 a.m. in Sorrento.
Thursday, 4/21 – Sunday 4/24: Visits to Naples, Pompeii, and Capri, all from our base in Sorrento.
Monday, 4/25: Move base to Amalfi.
Tuesday, 4/26 – Saturday 4/30: Further explore Amalfi and nearby coastal towns of Positano, Ravello, and Paestum from our base in Amalfi.
Our class is split into three groups, one goes to the Amalfi Coast (mine), another goes to Florence and the third goes to Santorini, a Greek Island. My group plans on getting an apartment/small house to stay in during our trip. It sounds amazing :D I also want to fit Rome in that first week along with another Italian city, so Greece might come in May. I cant wait for the food!!!!!!!
Everything is going good. It couldnt be better. I miss my family and friends, but these next 12 weeks are going to go by faster than ever. Senior year is coming so soon and I can't help but think about it as I look for jobs. I think that is all for now! :) <3
