. Well.........I asked an officer, who spoke no english, where my train was and it turns out...it was gone. He takes me to the ticket booth and finds another officer who speaks english. And between me, him, and Chris who is talking to them on the phone, we decide that I will need to stay in a hotel and get the train to Bayreuth at 7am Christmas morning. The autobahn was closed and its a far ride for Chris to that was the best solution. The hotel was paid for which was good and the hotel was literally across the sidewalk from the train station. So I spent Christmas Eve alone in a hotel. Had a Chinese Buffet for dinner and watched Home Alone dubbed in German on the tv that night.
Christmas morning. I had my butt parked on the bench in the train station at 6:30am so I would not miss the train at 7am. It had snowed so much the night before I didnt even realize there were stairs in front of my hotel until i started sliding down them. Nothing is plowed or shoveled or anything. Streets dont get plowed, nothing gets taken care of with the snow. The 2 minute walk to the train station was quite difficult. I meet a really nice guy my age who speaks perfect english who is getting on the same train as me. So it was nice to sit with him and another guy who spoke english and the train ride was actually pretty fun. It was only supposed to be 3 1/2 hours. Instead it took 4 1/2 hours. But I finally got there. Chris, Nancy, Zoey, and Chris's mom were all waiting at the station for me. And it was so nice to see them!!!! After 2 1/2 days of traveling I finally got there!!!!!!!!!!
Now the I'm in Berlin, I need to get on a train to Bayreuth. Chris is helping a lot from his end telling me where to go and what trains to catch. From the airport I need to actually get into the city. With my horrible pronunciation of "Bayreuth" and any other german name thrown my way, I'm surprised I didnt end up in a different place. But it did happen, once, and luckily it wasnt a huge mistake. I was talking to a woman who was helping me get to Berlin Hauptbahnhof. But when I got there, and bought my ticket that would take me to Bayreuth, I realized I was at Berlin Ostbahnhof. She thought I said Ostbahnhof and not Hauptbahnhof!! Luckily, it was only a few stations away and I was there in plenty of time. The train was scheduled to leave at 4:45. I had a transfer train in Dresden at 7:01 and would be in Bayreuth by 10:30. The train was 25 minutes late in leaving because we were waiting for another train to come so those people could get on, meaning we got to the station in Dresden 12 minutes past the time my transfer was supposed to leave
