Flag of Costa Rica  ,
Wednesday, August 20, 2008

A not-very-Costa Rican town built for foreign surfers.

Come to think of it, what IS Costa Rican? I talked about this with Eunate and heard similiar comments from other people: Costa Rica is incredibly rich in plant and animal diversity, but culturally it is difficult to pin down.

So what is typical Costa Rica? Gallo pinto (beans and rice)? No, they eat that all over Central America, they just change the name. The ability to cycle up steep hills with a passenger on your handlebars? Nope, they do that in Nicaragua too.

Again, I don't want to offend the locals. This is a genuine question: what defines the Costa Ricans and sets them apart from other Central American nations? Answers on a postcard please...

And once again, for those who are interested, this is probably the best beachbreak I've surfed in my life.
