I headed out to this town with Ricardo Martinez, another friend of Karla's. I'd met Ricardo briefly in Chiapas a few months back and now I was staying at his house in San Salvador. He is a Mexican journalist/activist working at the university in San Salvador, married to a Salvadoran woman and father to a little 18-month-old girl named Oventic, after the Zapatista Caracol.

Ricardo is an interesting guy, involved in a lot of things, from writing books on the Zapatista movement to community radio and projects for the communities that were displaced during the civil war. One of the projects was in Suchitoto, north of San Salvador, so I went along with him to visit the town.

While Ricardo had his meetings, I wandered around. The town is small, and there's nothing to do except enjoy the beauty, the tranquility and the friendliness of its inhabitants. I also wandered down to the manmade lake it overlooks, and waded through seas of plastic bags and bottles around its shores.
