Oaxaca City is so different to everything else I´ve seen in Mexico. Elsewhere machismo is the rule rather than the exception, everyone listens to mariachi music with cheesy love lyrics, people watch and read sensationalist rubbish designed to draw attention away from a government that is screwing its people (well, this happens in most places - but it seems more blatant in Mexico) and you see more moustaches than at the Blue Oyster on a Friday night.

In Oaxaca, there seems to be a strong social and environmental collective consciousness. The pedestrian rules in the city centre. Music is varied.

And there are no moustaches.

The food here is incredible. Last night I had tamales de mole negro.I wouldn´t have a clue where to start explaining what these are - you´ll just have to come here and try them for yourself. Oaxaca is also famous for it´s chocolate. Yayyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I´m off to eat some more....

Oaxaca City
After visiting mainly rural coastal towns Oaxaca City must look sohpisticated and less macho. But actually Oaxaca is not considered a progressive city in Mexico; there's political activisim that many times can be become violent as Oaxaca is well-known in Mexico for her corrupt government. If you have visited other Mexican cities you would have then a better perspective. Mexico City is the most progressive Mexican city: gay civil unions have recognition, gay conjugal visits are allowed in prisions, abortion is permitted, there's a programme to support economically the elderly, etc. and it's rule by the left party. Oaxaca is still ruled by PRI, the party that ruled Mexico for over 75 years.
