I spent five days in this place staying with Joanne Baker and her boyfriend Doug in Queens. Great people, fantastic hosts. I did a lot of walking, mainly around Manhattan, exploring Downtown, the Financial District, Ellis Island, the West Village, Midtown and the Upper West Side.
I hooked up with Sarah Chambers, an old schoolfriend from nearly 15 years ago, for dinner one night. It was great to catch up with her. She's changed very little since she was 15, except that now she's a paediatric cardiologist at Columbia Hospital!
I went out to see Odetta, the last of the great singers of spirituals. She's 77 years old and still capable of moving grown men to tears.
New York's a great city, but like all great cities it wore me out after just a couple of days. My last few days in town were spent lying around in Central Park, reading, writing and people-watching. The noise and the traffic and the smells and the people rushing by were all just a little too much for delicate old me so I hit the road....

Odette's
Her powers to move one must extend to the culinary - I went to a restaurant last night called Odette's in Primrose Hill. The slow roasted cocklet nearly moved me to tears. Well not exactly, but it did put a big smile on my face.
Seriously though, I never wished you luck on your travels - so best of luck and have a wonderful time!
