This past week, we had long field practice. Which means, we broke up into small groups and visited another volunteer and actually gave presentations, etc. My group went to a barrio of Asuncion. The area was actually really relaxed for being right near the city. However, the temptations of the city are so close. There are movie theaters, huge supermarkets (with air conditioning), and many restaurants...just like any big city.
There were three of us in our group. We met with a few different principals to learn how to get a contact in the schools. The school days here are only four hours. They have class from either 7am to 11am or 1 to 5pm or in some places from 5 or 6pm to 9 or 10pm. We sat in on a class a couple of weeks ago and it was really different than our classes in the U.S. The teacher read out of a book and the kids copied word for word what she said into their notebooks.
We also gave two presentations on self esteem. It was interesting and fun. First it was to a group of about 40. They were between 16yrs old and 19. It went well. The next day, we tried to use the same charla (presentation) for kids that were in 5th grade and it was pretty much a disaster. We thought we had changed it for the younger kids, but we hadnīt. It was a great learning experience for us though.
We stayed with host families for the week. My family, unlike the family in Guarambare, didnīt have water in their house, so we had to bring it in from the well. This meant that I had to take bucket baths inside. I stayed in a house with a younger girl who was 16 and her mom. The girl was really interested in hearing my opinions on different topics...drugs, homosexuals, what I liked about Paraguay, what the U.S. was like....so I was busy talking with her.
Overall, I had a fun experience being close to the city, however if my site is there, I probably wonīt have any money. We find out where our future sites are the 9th of April and then that weekend we go check it out. Iīll keep you updated.

Hi
I am glad to hear you haven't had any more rodent/insect experiences.....so are you saying you would be broke if you where placed by the city due to the spending opportunities? Now what could you possibly need? hmmm....insect repelent...rat traps haha:-)
Have you started any collections yet.....have you been taking many pictures? There are so many questions I would like to ask...but I am sure you are quite busy...maybe after you settle into your post?
Deb
Interesting...
It must be really interesting to hear what they believe about different topics. I can't even imagine living without running water. You are awesome Sam!
Guess what I have been doing... working on Shanna and Dave's wedding album... I wish that you were here so we could work on it like Teresa's, then I would be done already... not giving it as a first year anniversary gift!
Miss ya lots,
Katie
