This past Saturday I was able to go to my first Quince. A Quince is a girls 15th birthday party which, in Paraguay (and I think other latin american countries), is the time when a girl takes on more responsibilities and starts to become a woman. They throw a large party and the girl buys a gorgeous dress. The dresses are typically white and are similar to prom dresses in the U.S. This Quince had a video camera and a professional camera. They videotape the guests arriving and greeting the girl. They play a lot of loud music while the guests arrive. For about an hour or so we just sat and talked...watched the little children run around like they do at weddings in the U.S. Then the birthday girl´s father had ¨the first dance¨ with the daughter. After that, all the males in the room danced with the girl and got their picture taken. Supper arrived around 10pm. It was a huge piece of chicken, some rice, and sopa de paraguay (similar to cornbread). Shortly after that, I left because I had to get up early the next day. My host mom and sisters stayed until around 2 or 3. Paraguayans usually start dancing around 12. It was very interesting and I hope that I am invited to another when I can stay the whole time.
This Thursday we are breaking up into pairs and going into Asunciòn (the capital). We have a list of tasks that we need to accomplish. It is to get us used to traveling because on Saturday, it is our first visit to another volunteer´s site. We will be gone for four days. I have not found out where I am going, but I am excited!

Sam! that sounds awesome! it's a cool tradition I probably won't ever go to - I live vicariously through you! Nothing new here, just work and school. This weekend I am going to visit Heidi in Fargo and shopping with the aunts. Other than that, Karen cam over last night and picked up her dress finally. So glad you got a chance to put that on. Any way, love you and miss you! :)

Hey Sam! Thanks for including me on you travelpod! I feel bad that I didn't get to talk to you before you left, but I'm so excited for you! It sounds like you're meeting all kinds of fun people and doing amazing things! I'm so jealous! Aren't peace corps people amazing? It's inspiring to be around such passionate people, but that's why you'll be so great at it! I can't wait to hear about everything that's going on down there. Who knows, maybe there could be a CW reunion in Paraguay! I love you lots, safe travels!
