What I did
Following this we stopped at Murchison which is famous for icecreams. Oh my, am I in heaven?! I modestly opted for 1 scoop and it was HUGE!! Literally the size of about 4 normal scoops I couldnt eat it quick enough without half of it running down my arm and face. Absolutely delicious!
We then wound our way down through Buller Gorge with great scenic views- one of the best drives in New Zealand, before ending up at Westport to relax for the night.
The following day we drove to Cape Foulwind which has a large colony of seals. They were very noisy and it was extremely windy with huge crashing waves on the rocks. Next was Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. Pretty impressive formations with the layers of stratified limestone rocks eroded of thousands of years to give the effect of looking like pancake stacks. We were lucky with the best weather conditions for the blow holes aswell so these were throwing up dazzling columns of spray getting us pretty wet.
We then stopped at Greymouth, a large commercial town, to stock up on fancy dress items (beach theme) ready for the party tonight... So then onwards to our destination- Lake Mahinapua Hotel, home to the legendary landlord Les who is NZs oldest and most eccentric! So we had a funny night of guys in bikinis and wigs, guys in Borat style mankinis (Matt even stuffed a massive sausage down his), some mermaids, some hula skirts, a few snorkel masks and far too many speedos.
