Croatia's first National park, Plitvice was established in 1949 and covers 296.85 km2
of breathtaking natural splendor. The park was inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1979, in recognition of its "outstanding natural beauty and undisturbed production of travertine (tufa) through chemical and biological action". The park represents a phenomenon of karst hydrography (where the land is largely shaped by the dissolving action of water on carbonate bedrock)
The park harbours a grand collection of waterfalls, gallery of lakes, forest and diversity of animal life
The colors change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight. The sixteen lakes which are formed by natural dams of travertine are separated into upper and lower lakes.
So accompanied by our cheerful guide who chimed in with interesting facts about the area, we followed the boardwalks down to the big lake. Here we got a small boat across to the other side to begin our exploration of the upper lakes.
Absolutely breathtakingly incredibly naturally purely beautiful, our eyes had a feast!! The winding path followed round the edge of the lakes and sometimes suspended across, and next to waterfalls or through the dense green forest.
Our photos can do this area no justice as it really needs to be seen in its extraordinary environment. After our circuit of the upper lakes we got back into a boat to cruise further down the big lake to our lunch point, a lovely grassy meadow in the sunshine.
Then it was time to explore the lower lakes, again stunning natural beauty of water and rock formations surrounded by rich greens. Very enchanting as the clear fresh water (which we drank straight up) cascaded over the mossy rocks. We got to descend through a cave formed by the water flow and hiked up to some amazing viewpoints. Also got up close to the biggest waterfall, an impressive display.
Once we'd finished gawping at this natural beauty we piled back into the minibus and made our way back to camp. We then chilled out n had a good wash before cooking dinner and watching another cracking sunset.
