As I arrived at the airport in Sao Paolo I tried to remember my rusty Portuguese from my last visit in Brazil and at first I was getting the pronunciations all mixed up with Spanish and they were all looking at me very calmly as though this happens very often, and then they became quite annoyed if you expected them to know the Spanish pronunciation even if it was the same word but pronounced differently! I donīt know it was all confusing for me! But I managed to get away with murder by just smiling at me!
I am not sure what I think of Sao Paolo. It is not a place that I like very much I think. It made me sad to see how poor people are and in what terrible conditions people live. It was quite ironic sitting on the bus from the airport heading to the centre of the city and driving past the poshest buildings that belonged to Pfizer pharmaceutical and right next to it, it was a shanty town. And believe me I would be the last person to be scared of reality in life and not to want to see what I had seen, but my dislike is mostly towards to behaviour of the people. At first glance you wouldnītīt think I was a tourist in Brazil. In fact numerous occasions the staff at the airport thought I was Brazilian, as there is such a wide range of people and looks in this country. What does a Brazilian look like? Not your ideal tanned skin, dark long hair and big dark eyes, they only exist in our imaginations primarily created by Hollywood. They look like Europeans, Middle Eastern and Asians. In fact I canīt really compare them to South Americans.
When I was visiting Paratay and Ilha Grande and even Rio, I found the places and the people beautiful. Rio also has a realistic and idealistic side to it. You can walk along the Copacabana Beach and not see a sign of poverty and as soon as you step into the outer zones, you are surrounded by Shanty towns. Itīs a sad world.
My stay in Sao Paolo lasted for 2 days and I decided to head out to Recife to see my friend from School, Carolina, whom the last time I saw her, was us sitting across from each other at Biology class listening to Mrs. Barret. Going on about something that had something to do with Mitosis and Meiosis!
