Mokoro Ride

This morning we began our journey to Okavanga Delta. We are staying at Sitatunga for 2 nights, but tonight we are going across to the Delta, leaving our trailer behind with our things and just getting what we need for one night to go to the Delta. This is the bit of the trip I have been looking forward to. Being on the Makaro and being poled across. In a documentary I had watched a long time ago, I saw a group of tourists taking the same route on the same Makaros to go and see some hippos and other wildlife. Their boat was attacked by hippos as they got lost and entered an area with many mother hippos and their babies. So I was a little bit anxious as we got onto these Makaros and the film kept playing on my mind. But the ride was "as smooth as a Lizard drinking" as our Ausie friends would say. Mokoro is basically a long wooden boat which is being poled by a poller. The Delta is a beautiful place and the ride was very relaxing. It took approximately 2 hours to get to the other side, where we were going to camp for one night. Again this place was in the middle of no where. I quite liked the campsite, tho, Steve found it a little bit spooky. Specially when he had to go to the toilet, since it was an open toilet and not quite a bush toilet, he felt he was being watched by many eyes. And he assured me they weren't human eyes! :)
The afternoon of the same day we went for a long game walk. It deffinately felt like we were in Africa in the middle of no where. When you are at such places, the one thing that you often do, specially if you watch many documentaries, is to imagine you are watching one, except this time you are actually in it! On the walk we saw an Elephant. We stood facing the wind, so the Elephant and other animals for the matter, would not be able to smell us as long as they are ahead of us. We saw a giraffe and many Zebras. And of course a few Lion tracks! But they weren't fresh! The scenery was beautiful and we also managed to catch the sunset, which was magnificent.
We had dinner and stayed up till about 10 at night, telling stories by the campfire. That night we also had roasted marshmallows with melted chocolate sandwiched between some coconut biscuits! It was delicious! :) More thumbnails ...
