The night train from Moscow was rather comfortable despite being woken up at 0530 to pass customs. At least we didn't have to leave the train cabin and the official was rather good looking. The same couldn't be said for his female colleague.

The journey into Kiev was quite pleasant - rivers, hills and greenery. We arrived at 10am, hailed a cab and dumped our bags in our accommodations office before wondering off to explore the city and more importantly, find a chicken kiev for lunch. A seemingly simple task but one, much to our disappointment, we failed to achieve.

Kiev itself is small but pretty. Main street lined with shops and restaurants. A big square dotted with fountains, a monument and kiosks selling cheap beer. The obligatory McDonalds. We ventured uphill and strolled through a walled Old Town which housed a beautiful church and a few other nondescript buildings. Further down the road was another church capped by glistening gold.

Having failed in our quest to dine on kiev we sampled some locally brewed beers and ate at a tasty Turkish place whilst trying to avoid bumping into the remaining football hooligans left over from England's game against the Ukraine the night before.

At some stage during the day we hiked our bags over to the apartment we had rented. A big one bedroom place which came complete with chandelier, embossed wall paper (less glamorous than it sounds) and a much needed washing machine. Unfortunately no hot water though until we called the agency and they sent over a handyman.

We had originally planned to spend a few days in Kiev and a few more Odessa chilling by the beach but we were informed the boat we had planned to catch on 18 September didn't take passengers so we were forced to speed things up a little to catch a boat on the 15th instead. With our timescale reduced it was a somewhat mad dash around the city but I think we did it justice.
