17.1.09
During our stay in Adelaide we were able to pre-book a campervan to allow us to explore the South Island cheaply and at our own pace. We picked up our van on 17.1.09 only to find that we'd been upgraded to a bigger van - big enough for 4 people (apparently)! We counted our lucky stars and named our vessel 'The Upgrade'.
After filling 'The Upgrade' up with essential supplies (food and beer) we drove down for four hours to Lake Tekapo. She handled like a dream!
Lake Tekapo is a stunning turquoise lake with the southern alps as a backdrop. We parked and plugged 'The Upgrade' and went for an hours walk up to the top of Mount John to see the 360 degree view of the Lake and mountains. It looked just like a scene from Lord of the Rings in Rohan. Lake Tekapo is said to have the clearest night sky in the whole of New Zealand so there are several observatory domes on the top of the mountain too.
After a surprisingly good sleep we popped to the 'Church of the Good Shepherd', a tiny lake side church built in 1935 in the most amazing setting.
then back on the road...
