Due to the political unrest in Bangkok and the invasion of the international airport by anti-government supporters we opted to avoid the city altogether. Instead we rearranged our flights to leave from Singapore to go to Melbourne via Adelaide. As we were in the south of Thailand anyway, the bus journey only took 25 hours!!! It took us down through the whole length of mainland Malaysia, where we stopped for 30 mins to eat, into the very different Republic of Singapore. The bus was actually quite comfortable and we managed a few hours sleep, only waking up for two border crossings to add some more funky stamps to our passports.
We arrived at Singapore's 'Hive hostel' at 6am where they kindly gave us breakfast and let us drop our bags so that we could explore the city. In our two days in Singapore we.....
* discovered little India
* felt Christmassy for the first time!- Christmas decorations lined the high streets
* met Winnie the Pooh and friends
* had a moonlight walk along the classy riverside area
* ate fish and chips!!!! - the best Chantal's ever tasted!
* walked around the city, and the metro, wearing stylish reindeer antlers - to get into the Christmas spirit, and entertain the locals.
In the evening of our 2nd day in Singapore we entered the protest free international airport and leisurely boarded a plane for Australia - meeting lots of ex-Bangkok travelers doing the same.
We enjoyed our brief encounter with Singapore. Bring on the barbies!!!
