Sam and I spent yesterday exploring and enjoying Auckland. We woke up very early (still not quite got over the jet lag) and arrived at the museum of Auckland before it even opened (keen)! The museum is on top of a hill in a simply stunning park, and with the sun shining it was an absolute pleasure to sit outside until it opened.

Before coming to NZ I really knew very little about the Maori, other than that they do a rather scary dance (Sam tells me called the Haka) before rugby games. However, I now also know that they create the most amazing carvings, their houses were stunning and I have learnt a little more about previous conflicts between the Maori and settler Europeans... as Dad would say... fascinating.

The most eye opening part of the museum was the section on volcanoes! I don't think i'd quite appreciated that pretty much all of New Zealand is under a volcano. In order to drill the point home there was a simulation in the museum of what would happen in Auckland should the volcano it sits on erupts (a case when not if as the exhibition helpfully informed us). That was enough to have me dreaming of volcanos all night and I'm now quite pleased to be heading out of Auckland this morning.

On our travels through Auckland we came across a Hare Krishna festival which brought the main road to a standstill. Not what I was expecting in NZ, but do take a look at the photo. All the participants looked like they were having a great time.

Sam has now gone to collect our hire car, and then we'll be off on the first leg of our road trip to the Bay of Islands. This will be three days of relaxation before starting the proper touring. By the time we next move I will hopefully be over my cold and Sam might be sleeping past 3am in the morning!
