Ilha Grande

Samantha - We had to get up early to get a cab from our hostel in Rio to the Rodoviaria Novo (bus station) in downtown Rio. The bus was due to leave at 10:20, but being in Brazil we didn't actually leave until about 10:45...

The bus was very comfortable and the views out over the sea were pretty spectacular (we were lucky enough to get a seat on the left). The coast is really windy and there are islands dotted offshore all along the coast. It is called the Costa Verde and you can see why, as it is all so green. We got off at Angra dos Reis where we caught the ferry over to Ilha Grande which was to be our next stop.  Ilha Grande is an island off the coast of Brazil, with very pretty beaches and is mainly a holiday destination for Brazilians as well as the odd Gringo thrown in. It is really basic with no roads, cars and lots of jungle. Also there were hundreds of vultures and Alex told me that they were waiting to eat my eyeballs!  I didnīt believe him at first but actually they did follow me around for the whole time that we were there! Also, mosquitos are a bit of a pestilence.

Alex - Before we could get on the ferry Samantha (obviously the dodgy one out of the two of us) had her bags searched by two different federal police officers before we met a local who said he had somewhere were we could stay. He led us to a Pousada which is a sort of small family run hotel where we had a nice room with an ensuite and a fridge. It started to chuck it down with rain so we decided to find something to eat. We're both getting a bit fed up with brazillian food as it's always just a lump of fried meat, chips, rice and black bean very garlicy stew.

The following day we had a bit of an explore of some of the beaches close to the town we were staying in, before getting settled on a nice patch of sand for the best part of the rest of the day. Samantha went for a swim, I listened to music, we grabed a bite to eat at a nice restaurant actually on the beach and had quick wander around town.
Next stop Paraty.
