Home of the ladyboy. A city where even ugly people get approached by strangers and told how handsome they are. For some reason, this hasn't happened to me yet - I'm sure that it will happen next time that I'm in Bangkok. Fortunately, for someone as handsome, intelligent and modest as myself, I have a remarkably small ego that doesn't need massaging.
I've left most of the sightseeing until next time that I'm here, because, as usual, I hadn't done any planning. So I've spent a lot of time visiting travel booking places doing planning, which isn't easy when nobody speaks English. I did make it out to Lumphini park in the middle of the city to watch some people doing weird Tai Chi stuff. That was a bit different.
I found Bangkok very hard to adjust to. After the slow, relaxed pace of Perth, this place is crazy. I've been staying just off the Kao San road - which is backpacker central. And these are proper backpacking weirdos. They have, ethnic tattoos, braided hair, and fleas. They smell really bad too.
As predicted, I've struggled a bit with the food. There are no potatoes, so I 've had to make do with rice, and all the food is too spicy. I've struggled to find nice places to eat, but I finally found one on my last night in the city. I finished a not too spicy meal, and, making a mental note to re-visit when I come back to Bangkok, I turned to find a waiter to get my bill. At this point, a dirty great rat emergecd from the kitchen and zoomed out of the restaurant. I erased my mental note.
A quick word about those ladyboys. Either I haven't seen any since I arrived, or I'm really bad at spotting them. There were more in London. Certainly there was at least one at the NAO, and I've had my suspicions about Wendy Kenway-Smith for a long time.
Next, I head south for the beaches and islands of Southern Thailand for some sun.
