Today we had a free day, so we explored Le Chateau Ducal, a big castle from 1066
right across the street from our hotel. It was pretty big and gave us a really cool view of the city. Today is kind of like France’s "Labor Day," so a lot of stores were either closed, or didn’t open until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. We spent a lot of time walking around, going in a few stores, and exploring the city. I could definitely see myself learning French. I love saying “merci” and “au revoir.” I also love the lifestyle that they have here. Today Aaron and I went to a café, sat outside, ordered some French coffee, and smoked a cigarette (sorry Mom, I only smoked one). Don’t worry everyone, I haven’t taken up smoking, it was just an immersion thing. Everyone around us was also smoking and drinking coffee, I felt very French. If only I had been wearing a beret and a red and white striped shirt, haha. How stereotypical.
I don’t have the exact details for tomorrow yet, but we’re going to an island with a
castle on it, I think, I can’t recall the actual French name off the top of my head. I’ll provide more specifics tomorrow, we leave at 9AM, it will be an all day excursion. We leave for Paris on Friday and I can’t wait! I want to go to Disney Land Paris and the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. We will also be meeting up with another Linfield group while we’re in Paris, and one of my good friends, Sarah Click, will be there! I am very excited. Not that I don’t like Caen, but I know that Paris is going to be really cool and there will be a lot more things to do there. I’m trying to appreciate Europe as much as I can because all of my travels will be to Latin America from here on out. It will be a big contrast! I’m trying to plan a trip to Cuba during spring break while I’m in Mexico, hopefully my dad can tag along. I’m also going to apply to another Jan term in 2011 to Costa Rica. I need to get all of my traveling out before I have to settle down!
The last couple of days have been pretty low key. We haven't been on any excursions outside of Caen since the 16th. On Sunday, the 17th, we had a short class in the morning, then we had the rest of the day to ourselves. There is a pretty cool outdoor mall near our hotel, so that gives us a lot of places to walk around and people watch. We ate at a 3 story McDonald’s the other day for lunch, it was so awesome. McDonald’s is always so packed whenever we pass by, it’s weird in Europe, people just love McDonald’s. And it’s not just obese people and moms who don’t feel like cooking, it’s really posh women who are out shopping for the day and business men. The average McDonald’s customer is much different over here, so I don’t feel as bad for eating it. Funny how that works.
