Today we were heading for the second country on our trip. Canada.

When we were researching this trip both Rachael and I said that we wanted to see Niagara Falls if it was at all possible to fit it into our itinerary. Well we fit it in but today we were going to find out if we did it successfully.

We checked out of the disgusting hostel we were staying in and headed back to Penn station to get our train North, luckily we had found out that not only could we go to Canada for free on our train pass but that the USA side of the falls was not a very nice place to stay. Which came in handy as we not only didn't have enough money to stay in a hotel and the only hostel in the area was on the Canadian side, but all the sites we wanted to see were on that side too.

So after a very uneventful train journey North with the only excitement being the fact I got another stamp in my passport, due to crossing the border, we eventually rolled into town later than we expected, and found out that the hostel shuttle that was supposed to be waiting for us, wasn't.

A quick call to the hostel from two guys that were also on our train found us walking through downtown Niagara Falls, looking for the hostel after been given the worst directions ever! but thankfully we had the boys there to help us, god knows if we would have found it if it was just Rach and I, we both have terrible directional skills!

As it had been a long day and neither of us had really eaten, (the food on the train is all prepackaged crappy sandwiches and microwave pizzas and stuff - although I do have to admit that the pizzas were pretty good, reminded me of living in Lincoln and having pizza sandwiches!) we headed the 20 minutes walk into town to look at the falls briefly before finding a cashpoint where I tried unsuccessfully to get some cash out, but my bank card would just not work, and at a time of great importance too ;-( we ended up at a cash exchange place instead, and thankfully I had some US $ on me.

The only place that we could see open, and still serving food was Planet Hollywood, now these type of places aren't really my type of thing but as it was low season, (and by low, I mean we barely saw another person out and about and it was only around 7pm) we didn't really have a choice, so we headed inside.

Well, it started out great, we were given nice seats, had our drinks order taken, and when they arrived our drinks were awesome - we got milkshakes! - but then it stated to go downhill. We'd been chatting for about 15 minutes when we realised our food had been ages, there was only a few other customers and we'd both ordered pretty simple stuff, so we tried to catch the attention of our waiter, who came over and explained that the reason our food was taking so long was that he had forgotten to put our cheque on, but that he had done it now, and would we like a free ceaser salad? yes we would!

When the food finally arrived, another 20 minutes later, while mine was great, the guy had ordered the wrong thing for Rachael, and it was something that she didn't like. We ended up sharing meals and eating what we could before paying up, leaving no tip and heading back outside into the freezing cold.

Did I mention it was cold here! the river that comes off the falls is half frozen over and there is massive chunks of ice at the bottom of the falls themselves, so after dinner we walked very quickly back to the falls so that we could see what they looked like all lit up at night - very pretty - before we headed back to the hostel, where we showered to get warm and then went to bed.
