What a day to spend walking around barefoot amongst temples in the crazy 45 degree heat, burning the soles of our feet on the stone flooring as the locals sniggered at us with our sissy skin. We are modelling rather attractive burn on our hands and forearms from riding around the sites (still the best way to see them) of ancient cities (well, mostly half built walls) and stupendous stupas. We have to say this is what we think of some of the recommendations in the Lonely Planet that led us on delirium-inducing fire ball heat rides to some of these places:
Some of it was a little over-egged to say the least – just don't expect Angkor Wat.
We did, however see officially the oldest tree in the world (2000 years) and some fine stupas which made up for things. Then we got a right royal soaking again in a monster rain storm as we fled back to the safety of our charming room in the guest house, which we shared with a small toad and a large cockroach. Heaven on earth!
