The train ride from Ella to Kandy was slow but spectacular. Luckily we have these pictures to prove it as Sal spent most of the time in a diarrhoea-induced trance, hugging the window frame and willing the 8 hour torture of stomach cramps to end... poor thing!

Rich took his life in his own hands both to hang out of the door to get some of the shots and to sample the local snacks he was kindly offered by a lad he met at the end of the carriage.

You won't see any pictures of Kandy but we (perhaps unfairly) decided there wasn't much to do there after a bit of a debacle finding a hotel with clean rooms that wasn't charging by the hour. We ended up 5 kms outside of town and decided to push on north the next morning to the ancient cities.

Rich also spent about an hour and a half hunting down a spider the size of a dinner plate around the room that had hitch-hiked from Ella in Sal's bag and exited rather swiftly across her leg as she unpacked. You can't be too careful when they're that big, although Rich managed to fluff three gilt-edged opportunities to splat it before having to crawl on hands and knees under the dresser to finally strike the killer blow(s)
