Opetepe is an island formed by twin volcanoes raising out of a lake.  Conception and Maderas lava flowed to create an isthmus between the two creating an island who's name is between 2 hills.

We arrived by ferry that looked more like a type of fishing boat on 3 levels with space for a few cars.  We could see the island quite well from the mainland but it was still great watching it get closer and closer as we were a good hour away.  It was quite Jurassic Park like, with the foresty jungles over the lowlands and these 2 huge volcanoes at either end.  The drive to our hotel was mostly off road so pretty bumpy.  Once we arrived playa santa domingo was lovely with little huts with terraces and hammocks.  This was definatly the place for me to catch up on some sleep and relax big time especially as we have a 4.30am start for Costa Rica on thursday.

I headed down to the beach of darkish sand and was met by a scene that I thought only exsisted in fairy tales or disney movies.  Looking down to the right there were lots of chickens pecking at the sand hunting for food.  But what captivated me were the horses.  About 15 hourses and there babies were on the beach, some lying in the water, others just standing in the deep water as the waves crashed around them.  It was truly magical and I would have happily watched them all day but a little boy on horse back came and herded them up and sent them up the hill.

Ometepe is still ver un spoilt and rustic, it has a sence of mystery about it with the feeling of total isolation from the real world.

Definatly the place to be to be able to prepare for the next adrenalin packed 2 weeks around Costa Rica.
