We traveled to San Diego on the 'Pacific Surfliner' train from Santa Barbara. Really cool trip with views of the pacific ocean and the beaches on the west coast.
Our hostel in San Diego was called Lucky D's - excellent hostel with a lot of freebies (meals/internet access etc) which was handy. Very quirky hostel located in the gaslamp district of San Diego with loads of cool bars and live music.
Over the week we visited San Diego Zoo (one of the biggest zoos in the world - also featured in the film 'Anchorman') Saw lots of baby animals including the baby panda, meerkats, camel and koalas! Sally's favourite was 'Murri' the Koala - the only koala that was awake when we were there. We had a great time and Sal was very snap happy :)
We also visited Balboa Park (looked like Jurassic Park), Ocean Beach, Horton Plaza (huge outdoor mall), and downtown San Diego
One day we ventured south of the border into Mexico - to Tijuana! Where we had Fajitas and (you guessed it) Margeritas at Tijuana Tilly's on Avenida Revolucion. As tourism is so low at the mo in Mexico we were swamped with people trying to sell us souvenirs. Sally did come away with some essential Maracas. In one of the Liqour stores they were selling Tequila with a worm in.. lovely. Was cool as a small trip into Mexico - got some cool gifts and was interesting to see a small part of Mexico. Best Margeritas we've had.
San Diego was the furthest south of North America for our tour of California and we prefer San Diego to Los Angeles, although we are yet to see hollywood and the hills area!
