After a great week in San Francisco we arrived at the Torch Lite inn in Santa Cruz where we were booked up for 5 days of chilling on the beach. The greyhound journey down from San Francsico was great and first impressions of Santa Cruz were really good. The town had a very chilled surfery feel and was a lot smaller compared to the bigger cities that we have visited!
We spent every day at the beach, which was a five minute walk from our hotel - happy days. The weather was great - sun shined every day so we were very lucky. As every seaside town does, it had an amusement park on the beach (the Santa Cruz boardwalk) which had rides etc - the Mascott was "laughing Sal" a horrendous laughing clown - Sally wasn't impressed! One day we went over to 'municipal pier' where we saw more wild sealions amd great views of monterey bay. We had drinks on the pier one night at Miramar bar which was really nice
On our last day in Santa Cruz we headed to another beach south along the coast where they had an even bigger beach with a lighthouse - really cool cliffside walk to the beach- great views. Big Waves, surfers and white sand.
One night stop in Santa Barbara
After another long greyhound journey (at one point the driver was heading north for 20 miles instead of south without even realising!) we arrived at Santa Barbara Tourist Hostel where we stayed for one night. Really friendly people and a great location for catching the pacific surfliner train. We didnt get to see much of the city but what we saw we liked. Quite sophisticated but still had that beach feel and its full of spanish architecture. We ate at the 'natural cafe' - where they served some lovely veggie food! In the evening we managed to get over to the beach for the sunset - shame we didnt have more time here - we will just have to come back for longer next time!
