Arrived at Naxos at about 5.30 pm, got of the ship and found our lift to the hotel, the hotel owner picked us up, took about 15 mins from the port to the hotel, its very quite in Naxos at the moment, alot of hotels not open yet and some just starting to get ready for the tourist season. As it was quite we were upgraded to a bigger room, very nice.
We put our bags down and walked straight down to the beach, about 2 mins away
After watching another beautiful sunset we found a nice little place for dinner, total cost for 5 of us with drinks 42 euro, so cheap, and very nice people too, always seems to be the whole family involved in running these restaurants, nice to see.
Today we hired a car for the day 20 euro included insurance and headed off around the island.
This island is the biggest of the cycladic islands. We ended up doing over 100ks and didnt cover the whole island, but what we saw was incredible. Naxos is a lot greener than Santorini, lots of huge old olive trees, grape vines, wild flowers, cypress trees, lemon trees and stacked stone walls everywhere. We drove around up and over rocky mountains where you would see churches perched right up high on the top of these mountains, you wonder who would go to these churches and how they were built. We drove through a lot of beautiful old villages and stopped of at Dimitris temple that was built about 530 BC (see the photos)amazing.
It is a really pretty island and it is a shame that we only have a couple of days here, I wish we had more time. Oh well.
