Got here late Monday evening (1/5). Tues morning caught the BART (underground) to SF centre, where we gawped at the cable cars, wandered round China Town and generally acted touristy. Later we caught the BART again to another part of town where we were to pick up the rental car. It is a Ford Taurus, nice blue. Has all the usual car stuff but not as many wing mirrors as it started with. After having it less than an hour a lane change on the freeway resulted in a side sweep from a van also changing lanes. We both stopped, he called the Highway Patrol and we found out his mum was from Napier. The whole thing took ages and we still have to get the damage fixed.
Then on to the coast to stay with our first Freeloader host. Nice place, right on the coast, we have our own bedroom and bathroom. The three of us went out to an Eritrean restaurant. Meals you order all go on one big plate and you each get a v large spongy sort of pancake to pick the food up wiht Richard and Golden Gate

Tomorrow it is off to Alcatraz (swift retribution for the car incident).
Not sure what else.
Thanks to those who have emailed. Am trying to answer them. I currently have an Internet wireless connection courtesy of the cafe next door here (though they don't know that)'
Wed - drove (with some trepidation on my part) into town to catch a trip out to Alcatraz. Well worth doing. I'll add some pictures when I get a chance.
Then the usual look at the Golden Gate Bridge, followed by a circuitous route back (wasn't meant to be circuitous), blame the map reader.
Off to Sacramento tomorrow.

San Francisco
Poor you having and accident your first day with the car. Hopefully that will be your last now you've had that experience! Good tohera your host is pleasant - has he been showing you around the area?

We have had very big downpours recently as well as very warm weather. Did you hear about the big earthquake off the coast of Tonga last night? Set off a tsunami warning for NZ but that only lasted a few hours in the night so wasn't a big deal and there is supposedly nothing to worry about. Great to be in touch this way.

Dave is teaching this morning at Trident so happy about that.

The bars suit you Dad. As they say vertical bars are very slim-ing.
