Our first "Half Day" in Rome

We check into the hotel and this huge rush comes over us both and we both say to each other - "We are in Rome!" It was so exciting and right away we take a picture of each of us on the Balcony of our hotel. It was cool - we open the doors to the balcony and all the sounds and smells of Rome come rushing in! The view was very cool and made us just want to get out and see a little bit of Rome despite the fact that both of us were incredibly exhausted.
After that we each take a shower and decide to walk around a bit. We go to the roof of our hotel - the concierge said that it was a popular spot for tourists to take photos. We saw why immediately and took these cool shots - you could totally see St. Peter's Basilica - it was just awesome. The roof is where it really started to hit us - we were in Italy! We were in Rome!
So, we decide to walk to the Spanish Steps which was very close to where our hotel was - only a 10 minute walk. As we are walking we try to take it all in but the jet-lag really starts to take a hold on us. We walk down the Spanish Steps and see a McDonald's near by. Now, I know I will lose some of you here and maybe even make some of you a little mad but yes, we did eat our first meal in Italy at the McDonald's. There are 3 big reasons why: 1. We were absolutely starving 2. The jet lag just really hit us bad and we were super tired and just wanted a quick bite and then go back to the hotel 3. We were too tired to get adventurous and try to get some Italian food - plus we were a little intimidated at that point and wanted to be adventurous after we had some sleep. So, yes, we each had a big mac and called it a day and headed back to our hotel. As soon as our heads hit the pillows we were out until 5:30pm or so.
We decide to have an authentic Italian dinner and according to Frommers (I had done some research before the trip on where to eat) we decided to go to the best Pizzeria in Rome - Pizzeria Baffetto.
We were a little nervous I have to admit. We hop in our first Taxi to get to it - this Taxi ride was a blast. Drivers here are totally crazy - we zoomed down the super narrow streets almost hitting a million people and a million cars! The Taxi driver honked at everything and anything and seemed to get annoyed very easily. But, it was so cool to see the city that way. We arrive at the pizzeria and couldn't wait to try some real Italian Pizza! First we get adventurous by trying the house beer - Nastro Azzurro.
OMG it was so good and quickly we realized that we will be drinking a lot more of this beer! We also ordered bruchetta and a pizza. The bruchetta came with the freshest tomatoes, white beans and olives.
I loved it but Don wasn't a fan of it. The pizza was really good with such a thin crust we totally should have ordered two of them and still wish we would have! After a meal like that there was no way we were going to go back just yet!
So, we stop at this neat little bar on the main street near by the Pizzeria and have some drinks. It was really neat seeing the locals and I will never forget how happy Don and I were at that exact moment. In fact I am still getting a little choked up about how awesome that moment was. We just talked for about 3 hours about so many things, we laughed and just enjoyed and cherished the fact that we are now husband and wife. We toasted to our new life together and for so many more journeys like this one to come. And there are going to be so many! We hopped on a taxi home and called it a night. What a great first "Half Day" in Rome!
