Once Jason, the captain, came back to the boat, the ever-present threat of Paul or me contracting Rickkets or Kwashiokor disappeared since he actually knew how to cook! We went from toasted sandwiches, scrambled eggs & cabbage salads to proper meals. Not much has changed since my student days, then.
Paul & I started to take a few Spanish classes while we were there. I told them I was strictly a beginner, but I'm guessing something got lost in the translation on the sign-up sheet. Our teacher wasn't interested in covering boring stuff like "My name is Raul, king of my tribe" or "Sir, you have something dribbling down your nose". We went straight into the nitty-gritty of split infinitives, past participles & irregular conjunctions. I think his mandate was to get me discussing the benefits of Latin American socio-economic programs & their influence on the macro-economy at large. He only spoke Spanish to me & I wasn't encouraged to speak English, so there was lots of head nodding, smiling, frowning & tears. I began to be reminded of Afrikaans language lessons at school, which I dreaded. I did manage to pick up a smattering of the language after a few lessons, however I don't think I'm quite ready to tackle political debates or public speaking engagements yet!!!
