I got up just in time for breakfast this morning, which I want to take full advantage of over the next few days as there is no kitchen here so I have to buy my evening meals. Afterward, I made my way out to one of the hammocks situated on the beach where I intended to spend the whole day. Once comfortably ensconced in the hammock, I set about trying to learn about Fiji time, in which you never have to do anything immediately. This was disturbed by the arrival of the horses, just wandering, completely alone down the beach, with nothing to show that someone owned them beyond a long lead line fastened around their necks. About half an hour later they were followed by a young Fijian man who rode bareback along the beach. I was very tempted.
Instead, I laid back in my hammock and undertook the rather large task of catching up with my journal. So much for island time, I didn't dare leave this any later than I had already, I was two weeks behind. This task was randomly interspersed with uncontrolled breakouts of smiling when I realised that OI was living the ultimate tropical postcard, lying in a hammock, shaded by a thatched umberella, next to (albeit not the prettiest) beach under a perfectly clear sky. I spent a happy few hours reading, writing and relaxing.
When the sun got too hot I enquired about the best way to travel off the tourist track, and was told that the local bus services, while slow, would take me where I needed to go for much less than organisd tours like FEEJEE Experience. I decided to use the local buses. Back outside, I was greeted by a foal galloping alone along the beach and the factthat someone had stolen my hammock. It didn't detract from the foal though.
I am glad however that I will be on the move tomorrow as one day of absolute idleness is just about all that I can take. I am not looking forward to travelling in my shirt in thirty degree heat though, but until I know where I can and cannot wear my vests without causing offence I am going to be extra careful.
