The first thing about Australia? The heat here is good. It is not humid like the heat in Hong Kong, and the people are very friendly, though the famous Aussie humour (and not so famous generosity) is apparant as soon as you step off the plane. Also, you are not pushed or under pressure from people, which after Hong Kong is a great relief ( I know that it is a different culture and one of the reasons that I am travelling is to experience that, but like I said, it gets tiring). My first day was spent, as usual, in orientation and also laundry, and then considering how best to head north. Not being (yet) the backpacker mecca that is Eastern Australia, this appears to be quite expensive, but the scenery and life, I am told, are unmissable, so I will take my week in Perth as a break and an opportunity to figure out the most cost effective way of traversing the 1000 mils to Monkey Mia and Karijini national park, which are the two big thins that I want to see while I'm here, way out West. My other problem is not so monumental, but is in rather urgent need of attention. You see my walking socks are very, very smelly, and having just washed all my clothes they are remaining fairly whiffy. I think the only solution is to rinse them in the shower and hope it does the job, but that is not an experience that I relish, due to the afformenioned stink. Oh well, this is the glamourous side of backpacking I suppose, and I get to go and see Perth tomorrow (in non-smelly socks,) so its not all bad.
