Lamma Island

Yesterday I believed that the Peak was the only place that you could find some peace and quiet in Hong Kong - that was before my trip to Lamma, the 3rd largest of the Hong Kong islands.
When you first get off the ferry from Central you are confronted with masses of bikes chained to the pier, probably from people going the other way, as Lamma have virtually no roads. The streets of Yung Shue Wan, one of the larger settlements are tiny and crowded with merchandise that overspills its stores, and at first it feels like it was a mistake to come, because the island is dormant and there is very little to do. However, once you get onto the main hike across the island (from Yung Shue Wan to the other ferry port of Sok Kwu Wan), your whole viewpoint shifts. The greenery is incredible and the quiet and lack of development make it feel as though you are a hundred miles from the fumes and congestion of Hong Kong, though in reality it is only a 30min ferry ride. about half way through the hike you come to a beach, which is beautifully clean and which has an enclosed area for swimming. I spent my afternoon just listening to the waves - and also massaging my ankle, which appears to have swollen for some reason. After the beach the trail gets a little steeper, this would not present a problem for most people, but if you have a strained ankle its quite challenging, of course I could have gone back by the flat path to Yung Shue Wan, but, that being the sensible option, decided I would carry on, after all, I'd come to hike across the Island, not turn around half way across!
The trek is lovely and despite my ankle I took the time to walk to the different viewpoints, most of which produce great vistas, but one is spoiled by Lamma's power station, though as regards the island as a whole, its location os probably the best that could be found, as it is visible from relatively few vantage points. the island as a whole is simply about the removal of speed from life, sitting in the sun and allowing the breeze to wash away the humidity - and not hiking the hill trail with an injured ankle!!!!!
