Today was Waterford's third game and they played the southwest. Waterford lost a heartbreaker by 1 run. It all started in the first inning when Alyssa got on with a no out error, but Waterford was unable to take advantage of this bit of luck, and scored no runs. The same inning southwest scored the first run of the game to take the lead. In the second inning Waterford was once again held scoreless as the pitcher for southwest retired the side 1-2-3. Waterford was able to hold the big hitting southwest scoreless in the bottom of the inning. Jaime and Emily played a major role in the defense of the inning, as they each made a spectacular catch. In the third inning Waterford came alive and scored their first run of the game. The inning started with Emily drawing a no out walk. Talia then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Kate, running for Emily, to second base with one out. Kate then moved to third on a ground out and the first baseman over threw third to allow Kate to score at home. This tied the game at 1. Southwest then answered back in the bottom of the inning with 2 more runs. Jaime and Emily both had key catches in the inning again to save more runs from scoring. In the 4th inning Waterford was once again held scoreless, although they did have an opportunity to score and left runners on base. Southwest then stepped ahead farther scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th. They scored their 2 runs on a couple of hits, taking advantage of Waterford's few errors. Waterford started a major rally in the top of the 5th, while trailing 5 to 1. It began with Kelsey's single to start off the inning. Kate then followed with a single. Then Alyssa drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Kelli came up later in the inning with the bases loaded and one out. She hit a deep shot to the outfield, it was caught, but Kate scored on the sacrifice fly. This brought up Kassie with 2 outs; she walked to load the bases for Megan. Megan then hit a 2 RBI double to score Hannah and Alyssa. Kassie then got tagged out at home for the final out of the inning, but Waterford was still able to score 3 in the inning and cut the lead to one. Then in the bottom half of the inning Waterford held southwest scoreless as Kelli was doing well on the mound and she had great defense behind her to support her.  After the great inning previous, Waterford came into the last inning fired up and ready to win. They started off the inning with a lead off single by Mary. Jaime then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Talia, running for Mary, to 2nd. Then Kelsey grounded out to move her to third. Kate then came to the plate, under pressure, with 2 outs and the tying run on third. She, and Waterford, came up just short as she was retired to end the game. But, although it was a heart breaker, the girls took it well and are pumped up to win tomorrows game against Oregon to get to the semifinals and be on ESPN. GOOD LUCK WATEROFRD!!!
* I would also like to mention that after the game today their was a home run derby contest and Kelli came in first place after hitting one out of the park and several more deep shots. Way to go Kelli : )

Nice write-up and pics
I am really enjoying this blog. It was neat to see Robin and Caity there. Phil, I guess the Northwest has a pretty large English presence for some reason. My father was stationed in Seattle during WWII and ate a lot of fish and chips. I knew this game would be tough. That team was there the year before. That was great to hear about Kelli winning the derby.
